How Has Twitter Helped You?

By E. Mahony – spotlightideas.co.uk
Putting a brief report together (trying to get a better idea) about how Twitter has helped people in marketing / business in general (results so far).
If you would like to tell people how Twitter has helped your business then please let us know via comments (or email – eamon at buzzpp.com – if you prefer) of any positive experiences you’ve had.
The more info the better:
- in what ways you got Twitter to work for you
- how you got Twitter to work for you
- (briefly) the nature of your business
Thank you!

Twitter helps me widen my knowledge base and widen my worldview.
Since I started using Twitter (in June of 2008), I’ve increased my contacts significantly (not just on Twitter, but on other social networks like LinkedIn and Facebook). The increase in contacts is great; but the value of the contacts and the freelance business it has brought me is even better.
Twitter has also increased traffic to and exposure of my blog, provided me with endless ideas for blog posts, and allowed me to discuss those ideas with more people.
Twitter, in the immortal words of Maid Marion from Men in Tights, is Twiriffic!
It’s certainly given me something to evangelise about! I work with small businesses every week here in the UK, to increase their exposure & get more sales, and Twitter + Tweet Deck are two of the most essential tools!
With footfall fall off businesses need to seek out the best Social Media Tools to get it back & create new, 21st Century, routes to market. I have great fun meeting new people & getting that message across! We handle Internet & Social Media Marketing at all levels and firmly believe that “anyone who ain’t tweetin, ain’t livin!”.
Twitter is definitely helping to increase traffic to the Blog and the Website with every day that passes, AND you get to connect with lots of wonderful Tweeps – what more could you want!
Twitter has provided the opportunity to connect and communicate with a variety of people that I normally would never have had the chance to otherwise.
The networking opportunities that now exist are incredible. And this creates potential for new ideas that may lead to potential jobs for some.
I owe Twitter a lot – it helped me land my current job.
I write and blog about parenting for a daily newspaper, The Post-Standard, in Syracuse, NY.
Twitter has helped me:
1. connect with other parents.
2. promote and find readers for my blog.
3. find sources for my stories and blog.
4. finding out what is buzzing in the world of parenting/mommy blogs.
5. understand the blogosphere and how to generate traffic for my blog.
6. find other great blogs for me to read regularly.
Twitter is growing my audience for a very niche area (business development for agencies) by about 1-2 readers daily.
I also re-connected with an old client, Scot McKee of Birddog through Twitter.
I drive great traffic to the site and actively participate in online discussions to demonstrate my knowledge further.
Summary: Twitter – Love it!
Twitter has been amazing for my brother Fernando Varela, the next Bocelli. We have been able to promote him without a record label and sell his CDs. The promotion has led his song “Por ti volaré” to be #1 on iTunes for that song. He is in first place and Bocelli is in second place. I love the interaction and the connections we have made.
Twitter has helped my business get the word out about the online marketing video services we offer. Everytime I write a new blog post and put it on Twitter we get a rush of traffic to our website. Once monthly we also publish an e-newsletter and I will let people know when it’s coming out with a sign up link. Everytime I do that we get about 5-10 new subscribers every month. I also should mention it has helped me build valuable networking relationships with people at other companies who I have met at “TweetUps” in our area. Through these relationships I have gotten several projects to create new online marketing videos, viral marketing videos and online tutorial videos for several new clients. Twitter has been integral to the growth of our business.
Twitter has helped me to quickly have more relationships with both my prospects and my networking circle. One of the main things I ask s potential client today is ” Are you on twitter and have you found it an effective channel for driving relationships and sales?” Just that question alone usually gets the prospect talking in one way or another.

In response to your post on Twitter, I thought I would offer the following. I am an executive-level “outsourced” CMO. I provide strategic advice to clients on how to best spend their marketing dollars to increase revenues. I use Twitter primarily as research. I have been able to collect tons of research data on performance of social media and general marketing, expert advice and access to content that I can’t find anywhere else. It is a constant learning tool and I use it for educational purposes. I have had 3 client meetings in the past two weeks where I used information I picked up through Twitter links by some of the best followed social media experts. I have just started using it as a platform to send out content that I gather to my “followers”. The intent is to use it for my own brand credibility and source of expertise. My motto is simple, “If I don’t know, I’ll find someone that does… and share it.”

Here are my views

Twitter has helped me to increase the traffic to my blog and connect closely with my audience.
How has Twitter worked for me? (speaking on how it’s worked for me as a person, researcher-type, not for my business)
* In general, it has been a great (quick) resource for branding, tech, and social media news.
* I anticipate it helping in my job search.
I’m midrange technical, a master dabbler as I describe it. As such I walk the line between technical and non-technical people. One of the hardest things many very technical folks run into is understanding why the others “don’t get it”. On the other side the non-techies really focus on their job and technical stuff, hardware and such, is no more than a tool to get from A to B.
Myself, I see this in my daily communications. One of the things I like to do is make a shortcuts that bridge the gap. When I write blog entries they tend to be on tech subjects even if they’re intended for a non-technical audience. These blog entries frequently take hours, sometimes days, to write, review, etc.
Amongst other benefits in the simple world of Twitter I find it easy to complete thoughts, tasks and questions which otherwise languish. It’s ultimate simplicity in both usage and learning curve is what makes it as powerful as it is.
Have really only using Twitter aggressively for a few weeks, and it’s been a key part in doubling traffic to my strategy and corporate humor blogs during the past month.
I work for Qube Media, a Brighton based social media agency. Twitter has kind of revolutionised the way I use the internet. It is brilliant as a take it or leave it news source, and it also allows me to keep in touch with colleagues, friends and useful industry acquaintances without having to go through the hassle of sending an email. It is a great way to ask for help or generate new ideas and thoughts if you are stuck on a certain subject, and also a brilliant tool for spreading content around the web.
